Since Yao Ming's electrifying NBA debut with the Houston Rockets in 2002, the 7-foot-5 Chinese center has appeared in numerous TV commercials, on magazine covers, and in countless basketball-highlights reels. And yet, despite Yao's status as one of the country's most recognizable sports stars, the remarkable story of how a shy, gangly kid from Shanghai went on to become the NBA's first foreign-born and developed #1 draft pick has remained, until now, largely unknown.

With this memoir, Yao reveals himself as a thoughtful, opinionated young man whose insights extend far beyond the basketball court. He paints a compelling portrait of how his parents, both former Chinese basketball stars and fully aware of the bleak outlook for ex-players, resisted the Chinese government's interest in steering their son into the sport as a child. But the love of the game took hold of Yao as a teenager, and he began to sense both his own potential and the restraints he would face from the bureaucrats who ran the sport. As Yao's success in China grew, it became clear that his future would be with the NBA. But nothing came easily. With riveting detail, Yao recounts the white-knuckle gamesmanship required to win the approval of Chinese officials for his leap to America.

Yao: A Life in Two Worlds vividly chronicles Yao's move from Shanghai to Houston: The sudden millionaire has to learn to drive his newly acquired car; the young man who has only ever had one girlfriend tries to make sense of pro-basketball's hard-partying life off-court; the supremely dominant player in China is transformed into a NBA rookie unnerved at the prospect of facing Shaquille O'Neal. But soon enough, aided by his easygoing manner and sense of humor that has proved so appealing to fans, Yao finds his moorings and flourishes as a major NBA star with a worldwide following.

An exhaustive, soul-searching memoir, Bill Clinton's My Life is a refreshingly candid look at the former president as a son, brother, teacher, father, husband, and public figure. Clinton painstakingly outlines the history behind his greatest successes and failures, including his dedication to educational and economic reform, his war against a "vast right-wing operation" determined to destroy him, and the "morally indefensible" acts for which he was nearly impeached. My Life is autobiography as therapy--a personal history written by a man trying to face and banish his private demons.

Veteran reporter and NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw went to France to make a documentary marking the 40th anniversary of D-day in 1984. Although he was thoroughly briefed on the historical background of the invasion, he was totally unprepared for how it would affect him emotionally. Flooded with childhood memories of World War II, Brokaw began asking veterans at the ceremony to revisit their past and talk about what happened, triggering a chain reaction of war-torn confessions and Brokaw's compulsion to capture their experiences in what he terms "the permanence a book would represent."

These 2 books were written by a Chinese immigrant Dr. Wang Boqing and his daughter Kate who grew up in America.  It’s always a big challenge for immigrants to raise kids in America, because generation gaps are compounded by culture clashes.  It’s also a big challenge for kids to grow up in those families, as they are often confused by their identities.  Essays (some are bilingual) in these 2 books illustrate real life experiences of such a family, and provide perspectives from both sides.  Many of those essays were first published online, and were enormously popular among Chinese readers in America.  Kate was a top student in high school and was admitted by Harvard University in 2003.  Here’s the excerpt of her essay to Harvard:

As a child, I convinced myself that the way to happiness as Chinese immigrant in America was to assimilate into society.  I was so successful that my ethnicity was the only alien factor.  I adopted an American name, ate pizza, watched cartoons, but I was still Chinese.  To me, being Chinese meant not having a Great-aunt Edna who made fabulous cookies and cool parents who had been hippies.  I didn’t even know all my aunts, and my parents were too serious.  In my pursuit for conformity, I refused to acknowledge their shamefully tragic experiences, and cocooned myself in comfortable ignorance.  I repressed my subconscious desire to connect with China because I wanted to be wholly American.  But instead of disappearing, it festered quietly over the years.

This nagging feeling became excruciating when I hit my teens …
